Stimulus package legislation adopted by the Congress

As expected, the US Congress agrees to a support package for the US economy to mitigate the consequences of the pandemic. Republicans and Democrats reached an agreement on this on Sunday night.

The package is worth some 900 billion dollars. All Americans who earn less than $ 75.000 a year can now count on a one-off payment of $ 600. Some of the money also goes to people who have lost their jobs because of the COVID crisis. Emergency aid for small businesses is being extended and airlines are being given extra billions in aid.

The package has been discussed for months. Yesterday evening, the House of Representatives agreed; shortly afterwards, it became clear that there was also a majority in the Senate in favour of the measures. It is a compromise; the Democrats actually wanted direct aid for municipalities and states, but it will not be available for the time being.

President Trump is expected to sign the support act in the short term.
