Five bull tags issued for the Elk hunt in Wisconsin

Elk Restoration program was quite successful. Started in 1995 by reintroducing 25 elks to the Clam Lake range it was managed to grow to a solid 200 elks this year. From this year on limited and licensed elk hunt is possible. Total of five licenses will be issued. There are some rules of engagement:

  • There will be two seasons. The first one be open from Oct. 13 to Nov. 11. The second opens at Dec. 13 and closes Dec 21;
  • Only bull elk may be harvested;
  • Areas where Kentucky elk were released between 2015-2017 will be off limits to hunting until the population increases to levels identified in the elk management plan;
  • Only Wisconsin residents are eligible to receive an elk license. Nonresident Purple Heart recipients and qualified Armed Forces members are also eligible;
  • An elk license may be transferred to a Wisconsin resident youth hunter 17 years old or younger, or to a resident with a valid class A, B, C or D disabled permit.

Four tags will be awarded through a lottery drawing. Elk license applications can be purchased in the DNR Go Wild license system through May 31.
