A curfew has been imposed in Philadelphia

After the protests and riots over the last two nights, a curfew has been imposed in Philadelphia. The unrest in the American city started after a black man was killed by police officers. According to the family of 27-year-old Walter Wallace, he was suffering from mental illness. The man had bipolar disorder, and he was in a crisis situation.

The man was walking around with a knife on Monday and disobeyed a police order to drop the weapon. According to the police’s reading, 14 bullets were fired at Wallace. The two officers involved in the incident both fired seven times. How many times he’s been hit is unknown.

In the riots of the last few days, 172 people were arrested. 53 officers were injured after peaceful demonstrations resulted in riots. According to the council, there were at least a thousand people involved in looting on Tuesday. That high number surprised the police. In order to prevent further escalation, no one should be on the street from 9:00 to 6:00. The National Guard has been called in to reinforce emergency services in Philadelphia. The arrival of the troops is expected on Friday.

Curfew seems to be working. A demonstration planned earlier in the evening was postponed and then cancelled after only a dozen demonstrators showed up. Four people were later arrested for breaking curfew.
