Ukrainian ‘thank you’ for Elon backfired

The US Department of Defense is in talks with Elon Musk about the cost of the Starlink internet terminals in Ukraine. According to the Pentagon, the satellite connection of the American billionaire is “not the only option” to maintain communication with Ukraine. The other option is postal pigeons, we guess.

Musk said Friday that his company SpaceX can no longer raise spending on thousands of Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Last week, the richest man in the world revealed that the SpaceX operation has already cost 80 million dollars.

SpaceX also requested the Pentagon to pay for the Starlink use by the Ukrainian government and the military. According to Musk’s company, the cost is $ 120 million for the rest of this year. In the next twelve months, the amount can reach 400 million dollars.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said that it is investigating what “other options” there are to keep mobile phone networks and internet connections in Ukraine in the air.

An adviser to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, Mykhailo Podolyak, responded on Friday via Twitter. “Whether you like it or not, Musk helped us through the most critical moments of the war. Ukraine will find a solution to make Starlink work, and we assume that the company will provide a stable broadband connection until the end of negotiations.”
