Trump Back on Summit Track

U.S. officials are in North Korea “for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself,” President Trump tweeted Sunday.

“I truly believe North Korea has brilliant potential and will be a great economic and financial Nation one day. Kim Jong Un agrees with me on this. It will happen!” Trump tweeted.

On the same day, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement that “A U.S. delegation is in ongoing talks with North Korean officials at Panmunjom.”

Meanwhile, some politicians in Trump’s camp warn that the sides — the U.S., North Korea and South Korea — must first agree on the terms of the talks, including what exactly is the “denuclearization” of North Korea, and then decide on the tactics.

Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, a top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hailed Trump for his efforts toward such an historic summit.

Trump said Saturday that conversations about a potential summit were “going along very well.”

They were still “looking at June 12 in Singapore, that hasn’t changed,” Trump said at the White House Saturday.

He added that if “it would be a great thing” if they were “successful in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
