N. Korea: “Ready to Meet at Any Time, in Any Form”

The authorities of North Korea commented on the decision of US President Donald Trump to cancel the US-North Korean summit scheduled for June.

Pyongyang says Trump’s decision was unexpected and stated an immediate desire to work further for peace.

Moreover, North Korea is ready to hold a summit with the US at any time, Reuters said. The agency quoted North Korea’s deputy foreign minister Kim Kye-gwan as describing Mr Trump’s decision “extremely regrettable.”

“We are ready to negotiate at any time and in any form,” the diplomat said.

On Thursday, May 24, Donald Trump cancelled talks with Kim Jong Un, which were scheduled for June 12. “I was very much looking forward to being there with you. Sadly, based on the tremendous anger add open hostility displayed in your most recent statements, I feel it is it inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting,” Trump wrote to N. Korean leader in a letter distributed by the White House.

During May, Washington and Pyongyang did not exclude a breakdown of the summit. The summit would have been the first time a sitting US president had met a North Korean leader.

The details of the meeting in Singapore on 12 June were unclear. But talks would have focused on ways of denuclearising the Korean peninsula and reducing tensions.

An American official told Reuters on conditions of anonymity that the decision to cancel the summit was affected by North Korea actual pull-out of preparatory talks in recent weeks. “They stood us up,” the official said said. According to him, North Korean officials simply failed to come to Singapore to discuss the preparations for the summit.

Trump’s business-type letter finishes a standard clause. “If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write.”

Sad moment in history, but not without a glim of hope.
