EU, With Reservations, Hails Trump-Kim Deal

The meeting between the President of the United States of America Donald Trump and the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, “crucial and necessary step” for denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula so far, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated Tuesday.

“The meeting in Singapore confirms that diplomacy is the only way to advance towards a lasting peace on the Korean peninsula”, she said.

“The ultimate goal, which is shared by the entire international community and that declared the UN Security Council. It is a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a joint statement signed by the US and the DPRK leaders today gives a clear signal about moving toward this goal,” the top EU diplomat said in a statement.

The wording of the statement issued following the Singapore summit contains no formulations like “complete, verifiable or irreversible”, though.

Mogherini recalled that the European Union is ready, as before, to promote further steps aimed at ensuring long-term peace, security and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula, free of nuclear weapons.

Mogherini spoke at a discussion in plenary on the Iran nuclear deal, so she also reminded that the Iran nuclear deal was part of the same diplomatic track
