The wife of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, the former leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, was on Monday due to the U.s. authorities was arrested in an airport in the state of Virginia. She was arrested when she arrived in the United States via Dulles International Airport, just outside Washington, reports the US Department of Justice.
31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro, who has both American and Mexican nationality, is suspected of being involved in importing cocaine, heroin and marijuana to the US. In addition, she is said to have participated in two attempts by her husband to escape from a Mexican prison in 2015 and 2016. The woman’s due in court in Washington on Tuesday.
Her husband is ‘El Chapo’, is a life-long sentence in a high security prison in the US state of Colorado, and after, in February 2019, it was convicted and sentenced for trafficking large amounts of drugs, and to participate in murder plots as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, which is one of the most violent drug gangs in Mexico.
Her father, Ines Coronel Barreras, was also arrested for drug trafficking. He was arrested in 2013 with one of his sons and a number of other men in a warehouse in Arizona where hundreds of kilos of marijuana were stored.
Coronel Aispuro has been together with El Chapo since 2007, with whom she differs in age over 30 years. They had twins, two daughters, in 2011. The woman, a beauty queen in Mexico in her younger years, followed the trial of Guzman in the US very closely, even when during the testimonies it became increasingly clear that she herself would have played a role in the drug trade.
