Health experts are concerned over the use of ivermectin

American health experts are concerned about people taking the anti-parasitic agent Ivermectin because they believe it helps against the coronavirus. Hospitals in the U.S. State of Oklahoma are reporting an increasing number of patients who have taken an overdose of the drug.

The drug is used to treat cows and horses, but can also be prescribed to people. Patients may experience nausea, muscle pain and even loss of vision following an overdose.

Ivermectin was mentioned during the coronavirus pandemic as a possible agent that would alleviate or even prevent disease symptoms. This happened despite warnings from the authorities that it has not yet been shown to be suitable for treating a Coronavirus infection.

At the end of last month, the American drug watchdog FDA stressed that it can be dangerous to take large amounts of ivermectin yourself.

Americans acquire Ivermectin via the internet and specialist stores for livestock farmers. There are also doctors who prescribe the drug. The medical industry associations AMA, APHA and ASHP last week called for ivermectin not to be given to coronavirus patients, except for research purposes.
