Georgia Bans Disposable Plastic Bags

Disposable polyethylene will soon be outlawed in the post-Soviet republic of Georgia. A local TV channel reported Wednesday that as early as October 1, the country will stop producing, importing and selling the thinnest of them, and in the spring next year all polyethylene bags, except for biodegradable ones, will be banned altogether.

The Georgian government wants to reduce environmental pollution, and official Tbilisi has repeatedly stressed that the problem of the decomposition of plastic bags is really acute, so the country wants to gradually withdraw them from everyday life, and plans to encourage further environmental initiatives.

Other post-Soviet states seen to follow in the same direction as Ukraine’s Kyiv City Council has approved a project that proposed to limit the use of disposable plastic bags in stores.
